Crime Prevention Tips
If you have no security measures in place, then your home is 5 times more likely to be burgled than the home of someone that has even the simplest security measures. Just by making a few improvements to your home security such as upgrading your locks can make a huge difference when it comes to keeping your home safe from burglars. Below are a few tips to help you to reduce your chance of becoming a victim of crime.
Windows and Doors
Most UK burglaries are achieved by the burglar snapping the door lock or kicking it in. So, it’s a good idea to make sure you have a strong external door and high-quality locks to prevent this happening at your property. You may also consider having a bar fitted for added strength to your door.
If you have glass panels on your door then it is vulnerable. You may consider replacing the glass with laminated glass as it is much stronger. There is also a film available in most DIY stores that you can stick over the glass panels to make them stronger and harder to break.
If your window locks don’t require keys, then you may want to upgrade all downstairs windows to key operated locks as they are much more secure.
A key piece of advice is that if you don’t know who the person at your door is then don’t open it! You can check the callers identify by calling the company they claim to be from, be it, water, gas, or even the police. Be sure to use a number you find yourself from a telephone book, never use a number they provide as it could be a fake!
If you are going on holiday, then there are a few security tips that you should put into action:
Use timer lights so it looks like someone is home in the evening.
Ask a trusted neighbour, friend or family member to collect your mail and open and close curtains while your away.
Cancel any milk or newspaper delivery’s until you are back
Consider using the Royal Mails ‘keepsafe’ service (they hold your mail for up to 2 months while you are away)
Don’t advertise on social media that you are going to be away as burglars could use this to their advantage
